Climate Change and Irrigation Planning

Irrigation infrastructure is a 20 to 30 year asset. Designing it on a rainfall record that no longer represents the future climate embeds risk into the balance sheet for decades.

Practical adaptation does not require perfect climate prediction. It requires designing for a range: testing scheme performance under drier and more variable scenarios and identifying where the design fails first.

In most schemes the first failure point is storage, not conveyance. Modest increases in storage volume at design stage are far cheaper than retrofitting after a failed season.

Scenario testing also informs crop and area decisions — sometimes the resilient answer is a smaller, fully secure irrigated area rather than a larger, marginal one.
