Drip vs Centre Pivot: Which System Is Right?

Centre pivots suit large, regular fields with rotational field crops, moderate water quality and a reliable power supply. They are labour-light, mechanically robust and simple to operate, which matters where skilled irrigation labour is scarce.
Drip suits high-value, closely spaced or permanent crops, irregular field shapes, steep terrain and situations where every cubic metre must be accounted for. It delivers the highest application efficiency available, but it is unforgiving about water quality: without adequate filtration and a maintained flushing regime, emitters block and uniformity collapses.
Water quality is often the deciding factor. Borehole water with high iron or biological loading will demand a filtration and chemical treatment regime that some operations cannot sustain, which can make a well-designed pivot the more reliable outcome even though it is less efficient on paper.
The correct method is to compare systems on whole-life cost per tonne of output under the farm's actual water, energy and labour conditions — then design the hydraulics to that decision.
